A subset of puncture wounds develop cellulitis, most often due to S. aureus; extension of infection from an external wound such as a puncture, laceration, abrasion, or insect bite is, in fact, among the most common sources of cellulitis overall, particularly in school-age children and adolescents. While group A streptococcus and S. aureus are the organisms most commonly recovered from cellulitis in general, Pseudomonas and mixed flora are characteristically responsible for cellulitis specifically secondary to puncture wounds of the foot. Deep infection (septic arthritis, infectious chondritis, or osteomyelitis) is uncommon after a simple puncture wound but should be considered when signs of infection persist beyond what would be expected for superficial cellulitis alone."
